Description: |
This is a sumptuous material, delicate to the touch and a joyous to the eye. The pattern is called "Kawung" and was produced with a combination of hand-drawn (tulis) and stamped (cap) Batik techniques. The Kawung pattern is one of the "forbidden" designs of the royal court of Java and was reserved only for members of the court.
This fabric may be used as a shawl or sash, tailored into a dress. Look closely at the detailed photographs to appreciate the relief in the weave of the fabric itself and the beauty of the pattern. Fibers from banana leaves are actually woven into the cloth to create this additional texture. |
